Day 3: Gorilla tracking/excursion in Loango National Park
The third day of your 6-day gorilla trekking tour in Gabon begins with an early morning meal, followed by a transfer to the Max Planck Gorilla Habituation and Research Project. You’ll be instructed on the rules to follow when searching for western lowland gorillas, and then an experienced pygmy master tracker will lead you through a full day of learning about these amazing primates and their daily habits. When you come across a family of western lowland gorillas, you must remain a distance of about 10 meters from them for the duration of the spectacular encounter, which involves snapping pictures and learning more about their habits.
The duration of the entire encounter may vary depending on where these species are located, but it is a truly unforgettable experience. Later, you will walk or ride a boat around the lagoon to Yatouga Base Camp, where researchers live. Expect to learn a lot about western lowland gorillas and the ongoing research while you’re here.
In the afternoon, you’ll go on a game drive through the park’s beautiful savanna grassland in a 4WD safari vehicle. This allows you to see a wide range of species such as leopards, duikers, birds, elephants, and many others. After that, return to the accommodation to unwind, eat, and sleep.

Tassi is notable for its vast number of large mammals that may be seen roaming freely along the beach. You may also see hippos swimming, and if you visit during the wet or rainy season, you may see numerous monkeys, buffaloes, and forest elephants grazing along the coastal grassland.
If you want to see turtles, the best time to visit is between October and February. You will be guided by an experienced guide at night to look for nesting marine turtles, which comprise four different species on Gabon’s beaches.
