    African Shy Five: Did You Know?Amakhala Game Reserve is a private wildlife sanctuary and offers an exclusive safari experience. Safari-goers opting to visit Amakhala can expect to see lions, elephants, buffalos, white rhino, stately giraffes, and several species of antelope. Furthermore, the elusive cheetah makes an appearance at Amakhala Game Reserve. For those opting for a night time safari, some of the shy five can sometimes be seen—namely, the aardvark and the porcupine. Lucky safari-goers could come across the brown hyena or the bat-eared fox, too.

    With more than 240 bird species recorded, Amakhala Game Reserve is a great birding destination for the avid twitchers. Common species include the African goshawk, the Jacka buzzard, and the goliath heron.

    Amakhala Game Reserve has a semi-arid climate, meaning wildlife tends to seek out water throughout the year. The driest season occurs through winter, which is generally from June to September, while October to April is great for birding, and an abundance of newborn wildlife can be found in summer.
