Giants Castle Nature Reserve is located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and is known for its impressive San rock art. The historic nature reserve is home to majestic eland and the beautiful bearded vulture and spans about 75,000 acres. It gets its name from the towering peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains, whose shadows resemble a sleeping giant. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is a World Heritage Site and Giants Castle occupies the middle of it. Approximately a four-hour drive from Johannesburg and three hours from Durban, Giants Castle is a wonderful weekend getaway spot. Popular activities in the nature reserve include hiking, mountain climbing and trout fishing.
Eland antelope and Chacma baboons are frequent visitors to Giants Castle, while mountain reedbuck and caracal have been seen on occasion. During the winter months, the world-famous Vulture Hide provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for birdwatchers and photographers to see and photograph the region's raptors and vultures, including the endangered bearded vulture, Cape vulture, and Verreaux's eagle.
The best time to visit Giants Castle is during the dry winter months of July, May, and August—all of which offer the lowest chance of major precipitation in Giants Castle. During this time, visitors have a better chance of spotting wildlife around the reserve.
The great climbing and walking opportunities at Giants Castle Nature Reserve are well-known and attract hikers from all over. Hikers should be aware that the weather can change at any time, and that they should be well-prepared because it can get extremely cold. Weather permitting, self-guided day treks around the lower areas of the Giants Castle Nature Reserve are available all year. The camp office has route maps accessible. For bird lovers, the reserve is home to approximately 170 bird species, including several raptors like the bearded vulture and black eagle.
Giants Castle Nature Reserve offers well-appointed and self-catering chalets. Each accommodation comes with a satellite TV, an equipped kitchen, and bathrooms.
