The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park boasts a magnificent location in the heart of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. Known as one of the largest salt flats in the world, it spans 3,900 square kilometres and lies southeast of the Okavango Delta. Furthermore, the Kalahari Desert hugs the National Park and adds to the striking beauty of this ancient natural area. 

Made up of many salt pans spread across the sandy desert, including Nxai Pan, Makgadikgadi is considered a nature photographer’s dream. The salt pans are all that remains of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi and appear as endless shimmering plains that generally come to life during the wet season. 

The two popular airports near the National Park are Maun Airport and Kasane Airport. Maun is approximately 162 kilometres from the main entrance between the town of Maun and Nata on Francistown Road. Visitors can access the Park by 4WD or arrange transportation through a tour operator. Additionally, there are chartered flights available.

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park becomes an important natural area for one of Africa’s largest zebra migrations, as well as wildebeest migration. The park comprises nutritious grasslands and large sheets of water after the wet season, which attract an impressive number of water birds, including flamingos, ducks, geese, and Great White Pelicans.

Other wildlife that can be seen include lions, cheetahs, eland, gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest, bushbuck, giraffes, steenbok, elephants, and many more. Additionally, over 225 bird species have been identified in the National Park.

The best time to visit Makgadikgadi Pans National Park depends on the objective of the visit. During the wet season, between November and March, the pan attracts thousands of birdlife and turns into a scenic wonderland. Visitors should note that the National Park is a year-round destination. The dry season is between April and October and can bring about harsh conditions from time to time.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a photographer’s dream. The endless sheets of the sandy desert provide perfect photo opportunities to capture the remoteness of the Park. Visitors can book a plethora of activities here, including game drives. For a unique perspective of the migratory birdlife, helicopter rides are the best way to view thousands of flamingos flocking to the water.
