Nearby natural attractions and neighbouring countries include the famous Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe National Park, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Morning Sun is known for its affordability, sustainable efforts, and eco-friendly principles. The Soutpansberg Mountain region boasts incredible biodiversity with almost 600 different trees, of which 400 are located in Morning Sun Nature Reserve. The reserve makes an excellent base for exploring the rest of the region and is approximately five hours from Johannesburg.

Morning Sun Nature Reserve is nestled in the Soutpansberg Mountain area, which has an incredibly high diversity of birds. 56% of the birds of Southern Africa and 75% of the relevant South African avifauna call the greater Soutpansberg area home. At Morning Sun, there are Crested Guinea fowls, as well as a Verreaux Eagles nest with a breeding pair. The nature reserve provides birdwatching and butterfly hotspots for avian enthusiasts. Furthermore, there are many wildlife species here, including leopards, hyenas, and the clawless otter. Others include baboons, monkeys and bushbabies, as well as 19 antelope species.

The best time to visit Morning Sun is between May and August (the winter months) when the weather is very temperate. However, the birding enthusiasts will want to visit during the summer, which can be very hot and rainy, and the best bird sightings are between November and February.

Morning Sun Nature Reserve boasts an array of outdoor recreation for any discerning traveller. This area is home to the Venda people and has a fascinating history. Guests visiting can enjoy both guided and unguided bush walks, as well as 4WD drives with a Venda guide, where they’ll discover the myths and legends surrounding the sacred forests and hidden lakes. The sacred Mashovhela rock pool is definitely worth a visit, and those with a keen interest in more rigorous activities can explore the hiking trails that include a night out under the stars at the Hammock Camp. Morning Sun is an oasis for birding enthusiasts as well. Other activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling and night sky safaris.

Morning Sun Nature Reserve features two lodges: the eco Mashovhela Bush Lodge and self-catering Lokovhela Mountain Cottages. Each lodge is ideal for small groups, backpackers, family-friendly getaways, and international travellers. Morning Sun has venues at Mashovhela Bush Lodge and the Drumbeat Restaurant which are ideal for small business conferences, weddings and functions. Wi-Fi is also available.
