Polokwane Game Reserve, with its unspoilt bushveld and excellent location, is home to over 20 game species. Amongst the species are the rare white rhinos, sable antelope and giraffes. The park is also an excellent spot for bird watching with approximately 300 bird species here. Bird watchers have a good chance of spotting raptors like the African Hawk-Eagle, Black-chested Snake-Eagle, the Secretary Bird, the Greater Kestrel, and the Gabar Goshawk. The game reserve is a prime example of preserving the threatened Pietersburg Plateau False Grassland and nature enthusiasts can explore and discover 110 different types of grass, approximately 280 flowering plants and 68 tree species. It is the pinnacle of ecotourism.

The climate here is superb and the addition of a rather exciting aloe forest on the northern slope of a low ridge makes the Polokwane Game Reserve an exciting park in which to walk. Summers can be extremely hot—although this is when you'd see most birds. This area is very pleasant from March to November.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, the reserve has several hiking trails. There is a popular 20km one-day hiking trail, which meanders through the reserve. There are horse riding trails available as well as a less challenging 5km trail, perfect for exploring in the early morning. Safari-goers can also book a morning or evening game drive. For an easy day, visitors can enjoy the game viewing, admire the stunning scenery and eat lunch at one of the idyllic picnic sites. For the intrepid at heart, Polokwane Game Reserve is the perfect place for mountain biking, hiking, and horse trails.

There are no accommodation options within Polokwane Game Reserve. However, there are plenty of options nearby. From hotels and guest lodges to boutique guesthouses and backpackers, there is something for everyone.
