Gwahumbe Reserve is located in Mid Illovo in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and offers an unforgettable getaway in the African wilderness. The Reserve wins the heart of every safari-goer and holds its own as an exceptional destination in this part of the country. Gwahumbe is a 700-hectare area that is part of the 3000-hectare Gwahumbe Valley. The breathtaking scenery is home to a broad range of vegetation and ecosystems ready to explore. The stunning rock faces that surround the reserve stand guard over Gwahumbe, offset by plateau grassland and rich riverine woods. Gwahumbe Reserve stands testimony to the wonder of this rare stretch of Africa, which lies at the confluence of the Umsunduze and Umgwahumbe Rivers—from which the reserve derives its name.
Because Gwahumbe is a small reserve, it provides excellent game viewing opportunities. Aside from the reserve's size, the calm animals mean plenty of opportunities to see natural behaviour in a beautiful setting. Nyala, impala, blesbok, Blue Wildebeest, reedbuck, kudu, bushbuck, Grey Duiker, and the endangered Blue Duiker may all be found here. Furthermore, those choosing Gwahumbwe can also spot giraffes, zebras, genet, serval, bush pigs, and other smaller species. In 2000, hippos were reintroduced into Malinga Hippo Pool, which was a first for the region.
More than 240 bird species have been reported at Gwahumbe, and the variety of habitats provides superb birding possibilities for both casual and serious birdwatchers.
Gwahumbe Reserve is a year-round destination, therefore safari-goers can book anytime. During the drier months, the vegetation thins out, so it might be easier to spot wildlife. Furthermore, the mid-summer months of December and January can get quite hot in the region.
Those staying at the Gwahumbe Reserve can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. The open game drives allow visitors to get up close and personal with the diverse fauna and flora that call the Gwahumbe Valley home. On a self-drive, there is also a network of 4WD roads to enjoy. The nature trails are great for safari-goers who prefer to take in the reserve's magnificence on foot. Furthermore, Gwahumbe's private nature reserve is an ideal site for birdwatching, so birding enthusiasts should bring along their binoculars and keep an eye out. Other activities and facilities on the reserve include picnics, junior ranger camps for kids, and spa treatments.
Gwahumbe Game Reserve features four different accommodation options, allowing guests to choose the best options for their ideal bush break. Three of the four options offer self-catering accommodation, while the Serengeti Lodge offers bed and breakfast. Facilities and services include babysitting, meal options arranged before arrival, Wi-Fi, and plenty of attractions and activities during a stay.
