Lusaka National Park | Zambia | Wild Safari Guide

Lusaka National Park boasts an excellent location just 30 kilometres from Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, and offers an exciting adventure for locals and tourists alike. The National Park opened its doors to the public in June 2015, making it the newest park in Zambia. Located on the southeast side of the city, Lusaka National Park is the most accessible park in the country and spans only 16,500 acres. Because of its location, it is not the most pristine park around, and can sometimes feel like a zoo, as some of the animals are fed in a pen.

Lusaka itself is a dazzling city with a plethora of sights and experiences. Local attractions around the National Park include Munda Wanga Environmental Park, Lilayi Elephant Nursery, and Kalimba Reptile Park. Kenneth Kaunda International Airport serves the capital city and with international flights from many destinations around the world.

Lusaka National Park is home to over 1,000 wildlife species. While the park might not be the top destination for a Big Five safari, it certainly satisfies the desire to reconnect with the great outdoors of Africa while staying close to the city. Inside the park, visitors will come across giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, sable, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, and pangolin—among other wildlife species.

Furthermore, the resident rhinos were imported from South Africa and de-horned for anti-poaching purposes. They are guarded 24 hours a day and usually roam around freely unless they’re feeding in their pens.

The best time to visit Lusaka is usually from June to September. The climate is pleasant year-round with warm summers and mild winters, as well as plenty of sun throughout the year. October and November can get very hot in Lusaka.

Lusaka National Park is not considered a top safari destination in Zambia. However, it is the perfect place for locals and tourists to reconnect with nature while staying close to the city. The safari experiences on offer in the National Park are great for family outings and day trips and include camping. For the intrepid at heart, walking safaris offer valuable insight into the resident wildlife, while cycling safaris are great for those who like to keep fit. Additionally, bird watchers are encouraged to bring along their binoculars for some incredible sightings high above.
