Visitors to Sabi Sands Game Reserve can drive or book a charter flight directly to Sabi Sands or one of the nearby local airports—Hoedspruit, Mpumalanga, and Skukuza.

No, Sabi Sands is not a malaria-free area. Experts advise travellers to consult a travel clinic for vaccination purposes before visiting these parts. Malaria is more prevalent in the wet season from October to April.

Q Can I self-drive around Sabi Sands?

No, you cannot. There is no self-driving allowed in Sabi Sands as it is a private reserve. Visitors either fly to their lodge or the lodge can organize a transfer from one of the local airports. The guided game drives are conducted by professional guides and are very informative.

Additionally, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is home to Africa’s famous Big Five, along with several clans of hyenas, impala, waterbuck, and kudu—among other antelope species.

The waterholes in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve tend to attract the likes of elephants, hippos, water hogs, and giraffes. The Greater Kruger National Park area boasts a staggering number of wildlife species. From over 30 species of amphibians and 114 species of reptiles to over 140 different mammals and 517 species of birds—this part of Africa is truly a wildlife mecca.

The Game Reserve is ideal throughout the year as there is a sufficient flow of water for the resident wildlife. The summer months are from October to April, while winter begins in May and ends in September. Temperatures vary between 8°C and 23°C in the cooler months and 24°C and 35°C during the hotter months of the year.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve borders the Kruger National Park, with no boundary fences—which means there is a vast diversity of wildlife that roams freely in this impressive natural environment.
