Urban Crisis Response in a Rapidly Changing World
On 6 October 2025, the world will come together to mark World Habitat Day, a United Nations-recognised observance dedicated to reflecting on the state of human settlements and the universal right to adequate shelter. In an era defined by increasing displacement, climate shocks, and political instability, the 2025 theme, “Urban Crisis Response,” brings urgent attention to how cities can become both sanctuaries and solutions in times of crisis.

Displacement is Becoming an Urban Issue
Today, a record 122 million people are forcibly displaced due to conflict, economic hardship, environmental disasters, and climate change. As the world urbanises at an unprecedented rate, more than 60% of displaced persons and migrants now seek refuge in urban areas. This shift is transforming cities into frontline responders—tasked with absorbing populations while managing strained resources and services. From rising informal settlements to overburdened infrastructure, urban areas face mounting challenges. But they also present opportunities: through inclusive governance, sustainable planning, and social cohesion, cities can be engines of stability and resilience.
Spotlight on Nairobi
The Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2025 will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, where government leaders, urban planners, researchers, and civil society will gather to share tools, policies, and practices that promote effective responses to urban displacement. The day will also feature the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards, the most prestigious human settlements award in the world, recognising individuals and institutions making outstanding contributions to sustainable urban development, shelter provision, and post-conflict reconstruction.
A History of Advocacy
Established by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/40/202 in 1985, World Habitat Day has long served as a platform to raise awareness around shelter rights and urban development. Past themes have tackled key issues, including “Cities and Climate Change,” “Planning Our Urban Future,” and “Cities Without Slums.”
Looking Ahead
As part of Urban October, a month-long campaign focused on sustainable urbanisation, World Habitat Day 2025 encourages global citizens to reimagine the role of cities during times of crisis. It challenges us to create urban environments that are not only liveable, but resilient, inclusive, and responsive to those who need them most.
