With their piercing call and striking appearance, African Fish Eagles are one of the most recognisable and admired birds in Africa. Often referred to as the “voice of Africa,” its distinctive cry is a familiar sound near lakes, rivers, and wetlands across the continent.
Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is a large raptor closely related to the American bald eagle. It thrives near large bodies of water where fish are abundant and tall perches provide ideal vantage points for hunting and nesting.

Physical Features and Behaviour
African Fish Eagles are easily identified by their white heads and chests, contrasting with dark brown bodies and black wings. They have powerful yellow talons and beaks designed for catching and carrying slippery fish.
These eagles are typically seen perched high in trees near water, watching for prey. Once spotted, they swoop down with remarkable speed and precision, snatching fish from the surface using their sharp, curved talons. While fish make up the bulk of their diet, they will also eat waterfowl, reptiles, and carrion when necessary.
Pairs often remain together for life and are known for their duet calls that echo across the water during breeding season. Nests are built high in trees and reused year after year, growing larger each season.

Where to Spot Them
The African Fish Eagle is widespread across Africa and is commonly seen in:
- The Okavango Delta, Botswana
- Chobe and Zambezi Rivers, Zambia and Zimbabwe
- Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria, East Africa
- Kazinga Channel, Uganda
- Kruger National Park, South Africa
They are especially active in the early mornings and late afternoons—ideal times for birdwatching and photography.
Symbol of the Wild
Beyond its ecological role, the African Fish Eagle holds cultural and symbolic significance. It is featured on the national emblems of Namibia, Zambia, and South Sudan, and is often seen as a symbol of power, freedom, and resilience.
