On Saturday, August 15, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa would be moving into Level 2 of the nationwide lockdown—which was imposed on March 26. This move, in particular, means the resumption of South African Tourism for local leisure travel. A big hooray for the industry, which has suffered a great deal over the last five months.
While the ban on international travel remains in place, hotels, Airbnbs, safari lodges, and other accommodation facilities can resume operations under Level 2 and will welcome back leisure travel between provinces. The re-opening of inter-provincial travel comes with strict hygiene and social distancing protocols and continues limitations on the number of guests permitted. However, South Africans can rejoice in the opportunity to experience the country with a renewed sense of wonder for their home.
