The impressive Hwange National Park lies in west Zimbabwe and is the biggest Park in the country. The main entrance boasts an excellent location—just a two-hour drive from iconic Victoria Falls—and was once a royal hunting ground for a warrior king. Hwange National Park is defined by lush grasslands and mopane woods and is home to an astounding amount of wildlife.

The Deka and Lukosi rivers and their tributaries drain the north and northwest of the park, while the south is drained by a tributary of the Nata River. Local attractions include Mandavu and Masuma dams, the Bumbusi National Monument, and the Nyamandhlovu Pan.

Hwange National Park is about 200 kilometres from Victoria Falls Airport and the town of Victoria Falls, making it easily accessible by road or charter flight. The town of Victoria Falls is considered the gateway to the impressive falls of the same name and offers amazing amenities and facilities.

Hwange National Park boasts an astounding variety of wildlife—with the largest population of elephants in the world. Amazingly, the National Park hosts over 40,000 tusked elephants, as well as 100 other species of mammals. Visitors can expect to spot the Big 5, with rare sightings of the white rhino. Additionally, giraffes are common sightings, as well as unusual antelope such as the greater kudu, gemsbok, sable, and roan antelope. Dawn and dusk attract spotted hyenas, while the wild dog population is making a comeback.

Among the wildlife to see in Hwange, there are a few rare animals that visitors should look out for. These include the aardvark, the serval, the porcupine, and the pangolin. At Nyamandlovu Pan, it isn’t uncommon for visitors to come across buffalos, giraffes, elephants, baboons, and even a few sleepy prides of lions.

The best time to visit Hwange National Park is during the dry season—between July and October—when wildlife viewing is at its prime. The resident animals in the park gather at numerous waterholes and are much easier to spot out of the wet season. For those wanting to visit Victoria Falls during their time at Hwange, August and September are the best times to see the thundering falls.
